“It’s not just about moving forward, it’s about the direction in which you move.”
Anand Kumar (born on 1st January 1973), is a person who believes in teaching and not just earning money. He faced hard times in his early age due to demise of his father and deprived of basic monetary needs. His area of interest in studies was Mathematics. In order to support the family, Kumar would work on Mathematics during day time and would sell “papads” in evening with his mother.
Embed of seed of ‘Super 30’
Kumar started teaching with just two students in his own ‘Ramanujan School of Mathematics’ by renting a classroom for Rs. 500, in order to support his mother in earning livelihood. In the year 2000, a poor student approached him to get coaching for IIT-JEE (entrance exam for taking admission to IIT) who was unable to afford the fees. Kumar saw a switch turn with the idea of “Super 30”.
His plan was to select 30 talented students who cannot afford the expensive fees charged for IIT-JEE coaching. The initiative of the plan was made effective in the year 2002 when ‘Ramanujan School of Mathematics’ conducted a competitive test for the “Super 30” scheme and chose thirty intelligent students from economically backward sections, educated them, and provided study materials and lodging for a year. His mother Smt. Jayanti Devi and his brother Pranav Kumar took care of the management. In the first year itself, 18 out of his 30 students got succeeded in cracking the IIT-JEE exam.
The gritty efforts of Kumar have touched the pinnacle of success amid 2003-2014. The success got multiplied with 308 out of 360 students making up for the IIT-JEE. A hat-trick was scored in 2010, all the students of Super 30 cleared IIT JEE entrance for the third consecutive time. Anand’s former students also joined as teachers for the Super 30.
Successful Super 30 Batch
The financial sources of the Super 30 educational scheme are the earnings of the Ramanujam Institute in the form of tuition fees. Any sort of financial assistance is not acquired from any government as well as private agencies.
The fabulous vision of Kumar of Super 30, under the banner of ‘Ramanujan School of Mathematics’, has been a great success over the year. The programme selects 30 praiseworthy and talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the IIT-JEE.
Touching Speech by Anand Kumar of Super 30 at Think India 2012
Anand Kumar as well as the SUPER 30 have achieved thousands of recognitions from many of famous personalities and media. Still the limit is fixed to 30 intelligent minds coming from economically backward sections.
The fact is that all the coaching and educational institutes have made business out of the knowledge. A step can be made towards spreading knowledge. It’s not only about making money; I bet you will be more satisfied with tears of happiness in the eyes of such students.
