“Some people are unbelievable , some are just weird, some are born talented and some work really hard to achieve their goals. One doesn’t know Hiren Patel belongs to which category. He must be a mixture of all”. When a man finds his passion for something, when he really wants to achieve something, he works hard for it and makes it possible. That’s exactly what Hiren Patel is doing.
Hiren Patel is going to participate in Ironman Triathlon – an event which consists of 3.86 km swimming, 180.25 km bicycle riding and a 42.2 km marathon run – raced in the order consecutively and without a break. It is considered to be as one of the toughest one-day sporting events in the world.
Hiren Patel also is the first and only Indian to finish London Edinburgh London (LEL) racing (1420 km) in 103 hours.
He belongs to a small town of Surat district named Kosamba (Gujarat). He did his B.Tech from SVNIT, Surat. And he is currently working as a Software Testing Analyst at Infosys, Pune. He developed his love for cycling during his college days at NIT, Surat campus which turned into passion during his stay in Pune where he rode 85 km to Mulshi with the Pune Randonneurs.
Initially, Hiren was afraid of riding bike in the dark with extreme cold and heavy rain conditions due to which he had to quit a 400 km BRM racing halfway down at 270 km. He then realised that a little courage and patience will help him overcome his fear. And thats what exactly happened and after a couple of weeks, he went for regular rides to Lonavala over the weekends.
Since then, there was no looking back for this young man from Kosamba. Mr Techie took cycling and running more than just a hobby and started participating in events such as Shivaji Marathon, mountain cycling, Pune Marathon, Enduro Adventure Race, Impulse Race , Asian Marathon, 1000 km BRM, Half Ironman and most important London -Edinburgh- London (LEL) 2013 where he achieved the feat of being the first Indian to complete the race.
Hiren Patel always dreamt of representing India. According to him, the best feeling he ever had was when he held the Indian flag at the finishing line of LEL racing event. He had tears in his eyes – the tears of joy.
Hiren had some downs too where he faced many injuries while riding. Once, he had a bad fall in Mahabaleshwar while riding down the hill which left him severely injured with a bleeding face. He couldn’t stand on his own feet for the next 2 months. But this didn’t let him down. He recovered soon and continued with his passion. Apart from working for MNC and earning pretty well, Hiren is doing something for his passion which is really inspiring.
From a ‘small town boy’ to the LEL racing champ – this path was not easy. So many difficulties, so many injuries, so many rise and falls but still Hiren is committed to his passion.
Hiren Patel has his eyes set on Ironman- Zurich 2015 where he will be participating along with 12 other aspiring men from India including Milind Soman.
Hiren is a big inspiration for those who want to achieve big in life but are obstructed by hurdles of helplessness and lack of resources. He has proved that even a boy from a small town can do wonders and achieve any feat.
“Find your passion: dream and work hard to achieve it.” – that’s his mantra.
An epitome of perseverence, Hiren is truly a great inspiration for all Indians. We wish him all the very best for Ironman Zurich 2015. May he emerge victorious and make our country proud.
