Legendary Cricketer: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Manohar Gavaskar  (nick named Sunny) is the man who certainly led his life as a real tiger in world cricket. He was born on 10 july 1949 ( presently aged 65) in Mumbai. He went on to play for India on international circuit by making his test debut on 6th march 1971 versus West Indies. Gavaskar showed his class by scoring 61 and 64* in his first appearance itself in test cricket. He played 125 test matches and scored 10122 runs with batting average of 51.12. He scored 34 centuries and 45 fifties with top score of 236* . The legendary man was the first person on the planet to score 10000 runs in test matches which was later on broken by master blaster Sachin Tendulkar.Sunil-Gavaskar

However, Sunny made his ODI debut after almost 3 years of his test debut on 13th july 1974 against England. His ODI career was not as successful as test but still he scored 3092 runs in 108 matches he played with an average of 35.13 and personal best score of 103 * runs.
The little fellow, though never wore helmet in his entire career, was still able to easily face the cruel fast bowlers of West Indies and Australia in 70’s and 80’s. Due to his outstanding willpower, brillaint technique and hunger for scoring runs, he was  called “LITTLE MASTER” of world cricket.

Sunil Gavaskar  was one of the members of 1983 world cup winning Indian team led by Kapil Dev. He also became the captain of Indian team but was never able to taste the sip of success during his captaincy. His son Rohan Gavaskar also tried his luck in cricket but never got as much success as his father did.

The legendary cricketer today is performing his duties as a cricket commentator. His famous dialogue “wallah wallah wallah” is as famous as he is and remains fresh in our mind always.
On march 28, 2014 hon’ble Supreme Court of India appointed him as the interim BCCI President to look into the matter of 7th season of IPL. The court also directed him to relinquish his job as a cricket commentator. This shows how respected this man is as hon’ble Supreme Court also has faith in him.

Sunil gavaskar is not just a name in Indian as well as world cricket but he is an inspiration for youngsters and generations to come. He can also be seen as a symbol of respect, strength, power and dedication.
